Anti-Smith antibody

Autoantibody directed against nuclear Smith (Sm) ribonucleoprotein complex, highly specific for systemic lupus erythematosus and used as a serologic criterion supporting SLE diagnosis in the context of positive ANA and compatible clinical manifestations.

Causes

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus

  • EBV infection

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Certain cancers: gastrointestinal, ovarian, and lung
