Decreased Base Excess

A negative deviation of base excess below -2 mEq/L on arterial blood gas, indicating a metabolic acidosis or relative excess of non-carbonic acids in the extracellular fluid.

Causes

  • Acid overproduction

    • Lactic acidosis

    • Diabetic ketoacidosis

    • Rhabdomyolysis

  • Loss of bicarbonate

    • Diarrhea

    • Renal failure with tubular acidosis

  • Severe dehydration

  • Shock

  • Sepsis

  • Drugs: Methanol, ethylene glycol, aspirin/salicylic acid, diuretics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
