Diagnostic finding

Decreased Phosphate

A reduction in serum phosphate concentration below the lower limit of normal (<2.5 mg/dL or 0.8 mmol/L), which may impair energy metabolism, 2,3-DPG and ATP generation, and contribute to neuromuscular, cardiac, and hematologic dysfunction.

Causes

  • Shift of phosphate into cells

    • Severe malnutrition

    • Refeeding syndrome

    • Respiratory alkalosis

  • Decreased intestinal absorption

    • Vitamin D deficiency

    • Diarrhea

    • Vomiting

    • Crohn's disease

    • Phosphate-binding antacids

  • Renal phosphate loss

    • Hyperparathyroidism

    • Alcohol abuse

    • Diuretics
