Erection

The neurovascular process in which erectile tissue of the penis becomes engorged with blood, producing rigidity and elongation sufficient for penetration, typically mediated by parasympathetic vasodilation and venous outflow restriction. Possible causes are sexual arousal, REM sleep, natural testosterone fluctuations, and medications (vasodilatators).
