Lagophthalmos

The incomplete closure of the eyelids, predisposing to exposure keratopathy and ocular surface desiccation. Possible causes are neurologic disease (Bells palsy, stroke, acoustic neuroma, shingles, Lyme disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome and myasthenia gravis), mechanical obstruction (scarring from burns/trauma/Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exophthalmos/proptosis, ectropion), over-aggressive blepharoplasty, and trauma to the orbicularis oculi muscle responsible for closing the eyelids.
