Periosteal thickening

An imaging manifestation of chronic periosteal reaction with the formation of new bone layers or generalized thickening along the cortical surface, producing focal or diffuse cortical hyperostosis and increased outer bone diameter. Possible causes are fracture, infection (steomyelitis, soft tissue infection), chronic overuse, bone tumor (benign, Ewing sarcoma, osteosarcoma), reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Graves' disease, or hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy .
