Vocal cord swelling

Edematous enlargement of the true vocal folds caused by accumulation of fluid within the lamina propria, altering normal vocal-fold vibration and resulting in dysphonia, hoarseness, or a change in voice quality.

Causes

• Acute or chronic laryngeal inflammation

  • Viral laryngitis

  • Bacterial laryngitis

• Phonotraumatic causes: Vocal abuse

• Trauma: Endotracheal intubation

• Acid reflux

  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease

• Allergic laryngeal inflammation

• Irritant exposure

  • Cigarette smoke

  • Chemical fumes

  • Air pollutants

• Vocal-fold lesions

• Chronic dehydration

• Systemic fluid-retaining states --> generalized laryngeal edema
