Vocal cord swelling

Edematous enlargement of the true vocal folds due to fluid accumulation within the lamina propria, resulting in altered vibratory properties and dysphonia. Typically associated with laryngeal inflammation (viral or bacterial laryngitis), phonotraumatic injury (vocal abuse), acid reflux, allergies, traume (endotracheal intubation), or irritant exposure (cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, or pollutants).
