Bulging tympanic membrane

Outward convex protrusion of the tympanic membrane due to increased pressure or fluid within the middle ear cavity, often accompanied by impaired membrane mobility on pneumatic otoscopy.

Causes

  • Acute otitis media

  • Eustachian tube blockage (the common cold, sinusitis, allergy, tobacco smoke exposure, teething in infants)
