Cor pulmonale

Right ventricular hypertrophy and dilation with resulting right-sided heart failure caused by primary disease of the lungs or pulmonary vasculature, typically mediated by pulmonary hypertension.

Causes of pulmonary hypertension

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Interstitial lung disease

  • Cystic fibrosis

  • Bronchiectasis

  • Pulmonary embolism

  • Obstructive sleep apnea

  • Kyphoscoliosis

  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome

  • Neuromuscular disease with respiratory failure (ALS)

  • Scleroderma/Systemic sclerosis
