Emboli
Intravascular mass (thrombus, fat droplet, air bubble, tumor) that dislodge from their site of origin and travel through the circulation to occlude distant vessels, causing ischemia and potential infarction of downstream tissues or organs. Possible causes are thromboemboli (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolismm, atrial fibrillation), fat emboli (bone fracture, liposuction, bone marrow transplant), air emboli (trauma, surgery, scuba diving), tumor embolism, amniotic fluid, and foreign object (fragmented medical equipment).
