Emphysema

Permanent, abnormal enlargement of distal air spaces with destruction of alveolar walls and loss of elastic recoil, leading to air trapping, reduced diffusing capacity, and progressive exertional dyspnea. Possible causes are tobacco smoking, air pollution, and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.
