Fecaluria

The passage of fecal material in the urine (fecaluria), typically caused by an abnormal fistulous connection between the lower gastrointestinal tract and the urinary bladder, allowing enteric contents and bacteria to enter the urinary tract.

Causes

• Inflammation/infection --> abscess --> fistula formation

  • Diverticulitis

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

  • Tuberculosis

• Malignancy

  • Colon cancer

  • Rectal cancer

  • Bladder cancer

• Treatment-related and iatrogenic causes

  • Pelvic radiation therapy

  • Surgical complications

  • Pelvic procedures causing fistula formation

• Congenital gastrointestinal–urinary tract malformations
