HIV

A human retrovirus of the genus Lentivirus that targets the body's immune system and destroys CD4+ helper T lymphocytes, leading to progressive cellular immunodeficiency and, if untreated, to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is transmitted primarily via blood, sexual fluids, and perinatally.
