Hyperesthesia

Increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli, characterized by pathological augmentation of cutaneous perception, often associated with neuropathic processes and heightened response to normally non-noxious stimuli. Possible causes are peripheral neuropathy (diabetes, alcohol abuse, vitamin B12 deficiency), herpes zoster infection, complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, medication (chemotherapy, antibiotics), hypothyroidism, and kidney failure.
