Diagnostic finding

Hyperproteinemia

An abnormal elevation of total serum protein concentration above the normal reference range (>8.3 g/dL or >83 g/L), typically resulting from increased immunoglobulin production, increased acute-phase proteins, or reduced plasma water content.

Causes

  • Dehydration --> hemoconcentration

  • Inflammation and infection --> increased immunoglobulins

  • Plasma cell and hematologic disorders --> increased immunoglobulin

    • Multiple myeloma

    • Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)

    • Waldenström macroglobulinemia

    • Other plasma cell dyscrasias

  • Amyloidosis (protein deposition)

  • Kidney failure --> reduced clearance of immunoglobulins

  • Liver failure: Cirrhosis --> increased immunoglobulin production

Also known as: Elevated blood protein, High blood protein
