Hypoesthesia

Partial or total loss of cutaneous sensibility, including impaired perception of tactile, pain, temperature, or vibratory stimuli due to dysfunction of peripheral or central sensory pathways.

Causes

• Peripheral nerve compression and entrapment

  • Herniated intervertebral disc causing nerve root compression

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Radial nerve compression (Saturday night palsy)

• Neurological causes

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Stroke

  • Spinal cord lesions

  • Brain or spinal cord tumors

  • Autoimmune neuropathies: Guillain-Barré Syndrome, CIDP, Multifocal Motor Neuropathy, Vasculitic Neuropathy

• Metabolic and systemic causes

  • Diabetic neuropathy

  • Kidney failure causing uremic neuropathy

  • Vitamin B1/B6/B12 deficiency

  • Peripheral artery disease causing ischemic nerve injury

• Toxic and medication-related causes

  • Chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity

  • Alcohol-related neuropathy

• Infectious causes

  • Herpes zoster infection (shingles)

  • Lyme disease

  • Leprosy

• Traumatic and physical causes

  • Frostbite

  • Burns

  • Physical nerve injuries

  • Crush injuries

• Peripheral nerve tumors

• Idiopathic polyneuropathy
