Moon face

Facial swelling and a rounded or puffy facial appearance caused by abnormal fat deposition, fluid accumulation, or soft tissue enlargement in the cheeks and temporal regions.

Causes

• Endocrine and hormonal causes

  • Hypercortisolism (Cushing syndrome)

  • Prolonged systemic glucocorticoid therapy

  • Hypothyroidism

• Metabolic and systemic causes

  • Obesity

  • Kidney failure with fluid retention

  • Nephrotic syndrome causing hypoalbuminemia and edema

  • Fluid overload states

• Allergic and inflammatory causes

  • Allergic reactions

  • Angioedema

  • Facial inflammation or infection

• Genetic or constitutional facial fat distribution patterns
