Strawberry tongue

An erythematous enanthem of the dorsal tongue characterized by prominent, hyperplastic fungiform papillae protruding through a white-coated or denuded red mucosal surface.

Causes

• Bacterial causes: Scarlet fever, toxic shock syndrome

• Kawasaki disease

• Nutritional deficiencies: Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency

• Allergic reactions

• Viral infections: Measles, adenovirus, enterovirus
