Sunken fontanel

Depression of the fontanelles in an infant’s skull, typically indicating reduced intracranial volume due to decreased body water or reduced tissue volume.

Causes

  • Dehydration: Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, burns, or inadequate intake

  • Diabetes insipidus

  • Nutritional causes

    • Malnutrition

    • Kwashiorkor

    • Failure to thrive
