Xeroderma

Abnormal dryness with roughness and fine, scaly desquamation of the stratum corneum, typically due to decreased surface lipids or impaired barrier function. Possible causes are enviromental factors (low humidity, cold weather, frequent bathing, prolonged sun exposure), aging (decreased sebaceous gland activity), atopic dermatitis, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, nutritional deficiency (vitamin A or E), and medications (diuretics, oral retinoids, statins).
