Aphonia

A complete loss of voiced phonation resulting in an inability to produce an audible voice despite preserved respiration and often intact articulation and whisper.

Causes

  • Laryngitis

  • Growths or tumors: Nodule, polyp, cyst

  • Vocal cord paralysis: Nerve damage from neck surgery, trauma, or medical tube

  • Nerve damage: Recurrent and laryngeal nerve pathology

  • Vocal overuse: Excessive shouting, screaming

  • Irritants: Smoke, harsh chemicals, acid reflux (GERD)

  • Psychogenic aphonia: Severe stress, fear, shock, or emotional trauma
