Cerebral edema

Pathologic accumulation of fluid within brain parenchyma causing cerebral swelling, raised intracranial pressure, impaired neurologic function, and potentially resulting in fatal brain herniation.

Causes

  • Trauma

  • Infection

  • Tumor

  • Stroke

  • Hypoxia

  • Severe hypertension

  • Ammonia accumulation

  • Severe hyperglycemia
