Gastric ulcer

A mucosal defect in the gastric lining penetrating through the muscularis mucosa, typically >5 mm in diameter, resulting from disruption of mucosal defense by gastric acid and other injurious factors. Possible causes are Helicobacter pylori, NSAIDs, ICU patients (stress), smoking, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
