Neurofibroma

Benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor composed of proliferating Schwann cells, fibroblasts, and other nerve-associated connective tissue cells, typically arising within or along a peripheral nerve.

Causes

• Solitary neurofibroma: Sporadic localized oxidative DNA damage affecting Schwann cells or supporting nerve tissue

• Genetic causes: Neurofibromatosis type 1: Multiple neurofibromas involving peripheral nerves and associated with café-au-lait macule
