Periodontitis

A chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontium characterized by destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, formation of periodontal pockets, and potential tooth mobility or loss, usually associated with dental plaque-induced infection. Possible causes are poor oral hygiene, untreated gingivitis, tobacco use, genetics, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, leukemia, hormonal fluctuations (puberty, pregnancy, menopause), poor nutrition, and medications that reduce saliva (anticholinergics).
