Postvoid dribbling

The involuntary leakage of residual urine from the urethra shortly after completion of micturition, typically occurring after standing up or leaving the toilet despite apparently adequate bladder emptying.

Causes

  • Weak pelvic floor muscles: Age-related reduced bulbocavernosus muscle contraction

  • Incomplete urethral emptying

    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

    • Urethral diverticulum

    • Urethral stricture

    • Urethral obstruction

  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction affecting bladder or sphincter coordination

    • Spinal cord disorders

    • Multiple sclerosis

  • Increased intra-abdominal pressure

    • Chronic coughing

    • Obesity

    • Chronic constipation

  • Postoperative causes affecting urethral anatomy or pelvic floor function

    • Previous prostate surgery

    • Pelvic surgery
