Xerophthalmia

A progressive eye disease characterized by severe and persistent dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea. Untreated, it can lead to corneal ulceration and keratomalacia with risk of irreversible blindness. Possible causes are vitamin A deficiency, protein deficiency, fat malabsorption (celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, IBD), liver failure/cirrhosis, and alcohol abuse.
