Xerophthalmia

A progressive ocular disorder characterized by severe and persistent dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea. Untreated disease can progress to corneal ulceration, keratomalacia, and potentially irreversible blindness.

Causes

  • Nutritional deficiency

    • Vitamin A deficiency

    • Protein-energy malnutrition

    • Chronic alcohol abuse

  • Malabsorption disorders

    • Celiac disease

    • Cystic fibrosis

    • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

    • Other disorders causing fat malabsorption

  • Liver failure --> impaired hepatic storage or metabolism of vitamin A
