Alkalosis

A primary increase in blood pH above the normal range (7.35 - 7.45), usually due to loss of hydrogen ions or gain/retention of bicarbonate or other base.

Metabolic causes - Gain of bicarbonate or a loss of hydrogen ions

  • Prolonged vomiting

  • Diuretic overuse

  • Antacid or baking soda abuse

  • Laxative overuse

  • Severe dehydration

Respiratory causes - Hyperventilation flushes out too much carbon dioxide

  • Anxiety or panic

  • Fever or high altitude

  • Lung and liver disease

  • Aspirin poisoning
