Bile duct dilation

An abnormal increase in the diameter of the intrahepatic and/or extrahepatic bile ducts, typically ≥7-8 mm in adults.

Causes

  • Obstruction: Gallstones, tumors

  • Stricture

  • Inflammatory swelling: Pancreatitis, PSC, PBC

  • Prior cholecystectomy

  • Older age

  • Opioids (relaxation of the sphincter of Oddi)

  • Parasites: Biliary ascariasis

  • Congenital anomalies: Choledochal cysts or Caroli disease
