Elevated Alpha-fetoprotein

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations above the established reference range, functioning as a tumor marker and fetal anomaly marker.

  • Normal: 1-10 ng/mL

  • Moderate elevation: 10-200 ng/mL

  • Severe elevation: 200-400 ng/mL

Causes

  • Malignancy

    • Hepatocellular carcinoma

    • Nonseminomatous germ cell tumors

  • Chronic liver disease

    • Cirrhosis

    • Other chronic hepatic injury

  • Pregnancy

  • Fetal malformations

    • Spina bifida

    • Anencephaly

    • Gastroschisis

    • Omphalocele
