Elevated Central Venous Pressure

An abnormal increase in right atrial or thoracic vena caval pressure above the normal range (2–8 mmHg).

Causes

  • Cardiac disorders

    • Right heart failure

    • Tricuspid valve stenosis

    • Tricuspid valve regurgitation

    • Pulmonary hypertension

  • Hypervolemia

  • Obstruction to venous return

    • Cardiac tamponade

    • Constrictive pericarditis

    • Vena cava obstruction syndrome

  • Pulmonary disorders

    • Tension pneumothorax

    • Pulmonary embolism

    • Mechanical ventilation with elevated intrathoracic pressure
