Meteorism

The excessive accumulation of gas within the gastrointestinal tract, producing marked abdominal distension and tympany. Possible causes are aerophagia, bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates/fibers/artificial sweeteners, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, constipation, obstruction, ischemia, or peritonitis.
