Subcutaneous emphysema

The abnormal presence of air or gas within the subcutaneous tissues, most commonly involving the neck and chest wall.

Causes

  • Airways

    • Tracheobronchial injury

    • Pneumothorax

    • Pneumomediastinum

  • Barotrauma

    • Mechanical ventilation

    • Scuba diving

  • Gas-forming infections

    • Gas gangrene

    • Necrotizing fasciitis

  • Iatrogenic causes

    • Chest tube dislodgement

    • Surgery

    • Endoscopy

    • Dental or maxillofacial procedures

  • Esophageal rupture (Boerhaave syndrome)
