Asterixis

A motor disorder with brief, arrhythmic lapses of sustained voluntary muscle contraction, producing coarse, jerky or “flapping” movements of the outstretched hands.

Causes

  • Metabolic encephalopathy: hepatic, uremic

  • Toxic encephalopathy: antiepileptic, sedative

  • Hypokalemia

  • Hypomagnesemia

  • Hypoglycemia

  • Stroke

  • Brain hemorrhage

  • Heart failure

  • Respiratory failure
