Decreased Haptoglobin

Subnormal serum haptoglobin concentration (<0.3 g/L), typically reflecting accelerated intravascular hemolysis with increased free plasma hemoglobin–haptoglobin complex clearance.

Causes

• Intravascular hemolysis

• Liver disease with reduced hepatic haptoglobin synthesis

• Blood transfusion

• Hematoma

• Intramedullary hemolysis

• Elevated estrogen states

  • Pregnancy

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

• Congenital haptoglobin deficiency
