Glossitis

Inflammation of the tongue, characterized by lingual swelling, erythema, pain, and loss or atrophy of filiform papillae, potentially impairing articulation, mastication, and deglutition. Possible causes are nutritional deficiency (iron, folate, B12), infection (bacteria, herpes simplex, yeast/fungal), allergies (food, medications, toothpaste), trauma, xerostomia, celiac disease, or local irritants (tobacco, alcohol, hot/spicy foods).
