Stridor

A harsh, high-pitched, inspiratory wheezing sound caused by turbulent airflow through a critically narrowed upper airway, typically at the level of the larynx or trachea.

Causes

• Pediatric causes

  • Croup (laryngotracheobronchitis)

  • Laryngomalacia

  • Foreign body aspiration

  • Epiglottitis

• Adult causes

  • Vocal cord paralysis

  • Airway edema: Anaphylaxis, smoke inhalation, throat trauma

  • Upper airway tumors

  • Postoperative airway complications

  • Prolonged intubation-related airway injury

• Other causes

  • Subglottic stenosis

  • Tracheal stenosis
