Third heart sound
Low-frequency, brief, early diastolic ventricular sound (S3) occurring during rapid passive filling, best heard with the bell at the cardiac apex. Possible causes are physiologic (youth, high-output states, athletes, pregnancy), and pathologic (heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, heart valve disease, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and pericarditis).
