Muscle atrophy

A pathological reduction in skeletal muscle mass and fiber cross-sectional area leading to decreased muscle strength and impaired function. Possible causes are disuse (immobility, sedentary lifestyle, prolonged weightlessness during spaceflight), denervation (ALS, SMA, spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve damage, stroke, multiple sclerosis), systemic disease (cancer, heart failure, COPD, HIV), corticosteroids, aging, or malnutrition.
