Fecal incontinence

The impaired ability of the anorectal sphincter and pelvic floor to maintain continence, resulting in involuntary or unintentional passage or leakage of feces through the anus.

Causes

• Anal sphincter muscle damage or weakness

  • Childbirth-related sphincter tears

  • Episiotomy-related injury

  • Anorectal surgery (hemorrhoid surgery)

  • Rectal prolapse

  • Rectocele

  • Large hemorrhoids

• Anorectal neuropathy

  • Diabetic neuropathy

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Spinal cord injury

  • Cognitive impairment affecting toileting control

  • Other disorders affecting pelvic nerve control

• Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Chronic constipation with overflow incontinence

  • Chronic diarrhea

  • Crohn's disease

  • Ulcerative colitis
