Fecal incontinence

The impaired ability of the anorectal sphincter and pelvic floor to control defecation, resulting in involuntary or unintentional passage or leakage of feces through the anus. Possible causes are anal sphincter muscle damage/weakness (childbirth tear, episiotomies, anorectal hemorrhoid surgery), anorectal neuropathy (diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries), chronic constipation, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, rectocele, large hemorrhoids, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
