Diagnostic finding

Decreased Albumin

A reduction of serum albumin concentration below the reference range (35 to 54 g/L), associated with hypo-oncotic states and edema.

Causes

  • Impaired production (liver failure, malnutrition, malabsorption)

  • Increased loss (kidney disease with nephrotic syndrome, gastrointestinal loss due to protein-losing enteropathy, skin loss due to severe burns)

  • Redistribution (systemic inflammation, sepsis, heart failure)

Also known as: Hypoalbuminaemia, Hypoalbuminemia, Low Albumin
