Diagnostic finding
Hypoxemia
An abnormally low concentration of oxygen in the arterial blood (normal range: PaO₂ 10.6-13.3 kPa or 80-100 mmHg), reflecting impaired pulmonary gas exchange or oxygenation of circulating blood. Possible causes are lung disease (COPD, asthma, pneumonia, ARDS, interstitial lung disease leading to pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pulmonary edema), heart failure, sleep apnea, high altitude, and medications (narcotics or anesthetics).
