Confusion

An alteration of mental status characterized by impaired clarity of thought, reduced attention and concentration, and difficulty with orientation, memory, or coherent perception.

Causes

  • Infection (urinary tract infection, pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis)

  • Stroke

  • Seizure

  • Dehydration

  • Hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia

  • Electrolyte imbalance

  • Liver failure

  • Kidney failure

  • Medications (painkillers, sedatives, allergy medications)

  • Trauma

  • Sleep deprivation

  • Intense stress

  • Extreme pain

  • Cognitive decline
