An abnormally rapid heart rate (>100 beats per minute at rest), resulting from increased cardiac automaticity, altered conduction, or physiological stimulation.

  • Metabolic and endocrine causes

    • Hyperthyroidism

    • Anemia

    • Hypoglycemia

    • Electrolyte abnormalities:

      • Hypokalemia

      • Hyperkalemia

      • Hypomagnesemia

      • Hypocalcemia

  • Drug and stimulants

    • Caffeine

    • Nicotine

    • Amphetamines

    • Cocaine

    • Withdrawal states (alcohol or sedatives)

    • Other sympathomimetic stimulants
